Neschholz Fieldstone Church

In the village of Neschholz in the District of Potsdam-Mittelmark in Brandenburg stands a late Romanesque fieldstone church. It is a rectangular hall building with an apse in the east and a porch with a tower in the west. The nave dates from the 13th century and was built of fieldstone ashlars. The apse is also made of fieldstones, is semi-circular in shape and has a conical roof.
The first changes were made in the 16th century. They can be seen in the round arched windows of the nave and apse. Later, the top of the wall was raised with bricks, thus enlarging the nave.
The tower probably dates from the 18th century. It was built of bricks and received a half-timbered top, a so-called “Schweif” (curved) roof and a bell tower in the form of an octagonal lantern. The porch was added at the beginning of the 20th century during an extensive renovation.
Especially worth seeing is the opulently designed interior, which is reminiscent of the state room of a princely palace. It was designed in the neo-baroque style during the renovation at the beginning of the 20th century.
