Eurocopter BK-117

The Eurocopter BK-117 is based on a joint venture of the corporations Messerschmidt-Bolkow-Blohm (MSB) and Kawasaki, that was turned into Eurocopter Helicopters, Ltd in 1991. MBB provided the hingeless rotor head and Kawasaki contributed with the transmission. The helicopter is powered by two shaft turbines with a take-off power of 558 horsepower each. The standard version has room for seven people and one pilot. The concept was made for the use of the BK-117 as a multi-task helicopter, although there was greater emphasis put on civilian missions: The BK-117 is used by police, emergency services and fire fighters. It is also employed for freight traffic and in off-shore missions. Due to its steady flight characteristics and its large cabin, the BK-117 is often used as a flying ambulance.
